Different Lifestyles, Similar Goals

Village of Himbaherero in Northern NamibiaSomething that makes your Namibian experience more memorable is an opportunity to meet some of the country’s very special people. Consider a trip to a Himbaherrero village. There, an indigenous tour guide will translate for you and make you feel comfortable.

The Himba women will explain how they cover their skins with a mixture of goat butter and ochre (a red-oxide powder) for use as protection against the sun. They can also show you their kalebasses, carved-out pumpkins used for storing milk. As they explain their lifestyles, you will also hear the sounds of laughing children, playing soccer in the nearby savannah and the watch the Himba men tended to their herds in the distance.

The traditional Himba village consists of a series of round huts made from bent mopane-trunks, held together with dung and clay. Thatched roofs provide both shelter and shade.

Spend some time getting to know the Himba and realize there lifestyle is very different, but their concerns are not much different from ours. They want to be able to live in peace and raise their children in a healthy environment. They have used their resourcefulness and initiative to make the best of what little they have. They are very proud of what they have and are happy to show it to you. The hosts gifts of sugar, tea, maize meal or tobacco are highly appreciated. The women wear jewellery they made themselves and will selling bracelets, chains and rings.

You can book a trip to the Himba people separately or as part of a Namibian holiday package. For more information and requests please contact Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist gegen Spam Bots geschützt, Sie müssen JavaScript aktivieren, damit Sie es sehen können
