A special encounter

Seal coloy at cape cross Namibia A large colony with up to 10.000 Cape fur seals just in front of you: Oblivious to the tourists taking photos and coming so close, the seals take absolutely no notice and carry on fighting, bleating, swimming and sleeping. Males can weigh from 187 kg to 360 kg and are very territorial whilst looking after their harem of between 5 to 25 females. Any weak and dying are disposed of by scavenging black backed jackals who tread warily amongst the colony. Although fascinating to watch you will probably become overwhelmed by their strong smell and need to move on.

Cape Cross is also a historical place: The first European who landed on Namibian soil was the Portuguese explorer Diego Cao (1486). He erected the first stone cross in honour of King Johannes of Portugal. You may pass by the seals on your way from Swakopmund to the North of Namibia.

A trip to the seals can be booked separately or as part of a tour package by African Desk. Send your ideas to Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist gegen Spam Bots geschützt, Sie müssen JavaScript aktivieren, damit Sie es sehen können and we’ll send you a complete, no obligation quotation.
