Karakulia - A closely woven family
The working atmosphere alone is refreshing to see: men and women of "Karakulia Spinning and Weaving" sitting in front of their looms in sunlit rooms, carding artistic patterns, spinning wool or weaving and cutting down threads on rugs and carpets. A blind employee unravels woolballs. Everybody is chatting cheerfully or listening to radio programmes in Otjiherero, Damara, Otjivambo or English. At the same time ostriches, elephants and springboks are shaped out in grass savannahs - in modern cubistic style, ethnic Namibian or in impressionistic colours. The wool comes exclusively from Namibian Karakul sheep.
Karakulia Spinning and Weaving has built up an international reputation due to many overseas visitors ordering their individual motives for rugs, wall hangings and carpets. In addition to that they have acquired a high reputation for their social commitment: The company does not only train their employees as weavers, but also offers courses in office and computer work as well as an afternoon school programme to further the education of its employees' children. So far 19 employees have become home owners due to a housing project.
