Gamedrives in Etosha

Giraffen EtoshaEtosha means, in the Ovambo language, "place of dry water" or "large white place". The Etosha Pan, a part of Etosha National Park, has an area of approximately 6.000 square kilometer. The saline pan stretches 120 km at its east and west and, about 55 km north to south, covering almost a quarter of the park. The pan is mostly dry, except after the heavy summer rains. Then, flooding can occur, mainly from the Ekuma and Oshigambo rivers to the north.  Despite its massive size, only the southern edge of Etosha pan is accessible to the casual visitor.

There are three rest camps within the park at Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni. An extensive network of roads links the campsites with more than 30 water holes in the central and eastern region. These water holes are ideal places to sit and watch for game.

Day 1  Windhoek - Namutoni

Löwen in der Abenddämmerung EtoshasEarly morning departure from Windhoek heading north via Okahandja to Tsumeb. Visit Mine Museum in Tsumeb and Lake Otjikoto. The lake still contains various pieces of artillery and, if you believe the rumours, German troops also disposed of their war chests in this region. Heavy guns and ammunition were dumped in the sea after the war between Germans and the South African Union.

Continue east to Namutoni to visit an old German Fort built before the turn of the century. A floodlit waterhole next to the fort allows for comfortable game viewing at night. Overnight at Namutoni Rest Camp.

Day 2 Namutoni

Elefanten in Etosha. Foto: Bob MuirheadMore game viewing during the day around Namutoni. The park is the habitat of five rare or endangered species namely, the black rhinoceros, black-faced impala, roan, Hartmann's mountain zebra and the diminutive Damara dik-dik. More commonly seen species in Namutoni are Kudus and the "duiker." Be on the lookout for the black rhinoceros, elephant, lion and jackal. They generally drink at night at this waterhole. Overnight at Namutoni Rest Camp.

Day 3  Okaukuejo

Zebras am Wasserloch in EtoshaDepart from Namutoni through the Park and head west through Halali on route to Okaukeujo Rest Camp. Halali derives its name from an old German tune that is traditionally call made by the foresters to mark the end of a successful hunt. The Red hartebeest are more commonly spotted around Halali. Okaukeujo was the first rest camp opened to tourists and a special attraction of the camp is the waterhole just outside the perimeter of the camp. Overnight at Okaukeujo Rest Camp.

Day 4  Okaukuejo

More game viewing. For birdlovers there are up to 320 bird species recorded in the park. During good rains, up to a million flamingoes are seen in the pans. One fascinating aspect of these birds is their ability to save energy. Flamingoes fly from Etosha in the evening and arrive at dawn in Walvisbay, about a 500-km journey. Enjoy late night game watching at the waterhole. Overnight at Okaukuejo Rest Camp.

Day 5 Windhoek via Okahandja

Krokodilbabies OtjiwarongoAfter breakfast proceed towards Otjiwarongo, for Okahandja. Visit the woodcarver's market and a Crocodile farm in Otjiwarongo. About 20 crocodiles, some more than 90 years old, are lazily laying about in the sun. Some 1,300 young crocodiles are kept in incubators and interior water basins. At nine months, they are exported to Italy and Southafrica. Arrive late afternoon in Windhoek.
