Cultural Encounters - a 20-days trip to the people of Namibia

Himba-hairstyle. Photo: Tom ForgraveMeeting Namibian people in everyday-life- this is the focus of this cultural trip. You may melk goats on a Damarafarm, visit the Ovahimba and try out a natural sun screen of butterfat and red oxydes as well as follow the traces of the San in a Bushmen-trail.

Itinerary:


Windhoek - Lake Oanob (Rehoboth) - Sossusvlei - Swakopmund - Uis - Cape Cross - Opuwo - Etosha - Tsinsiabis - Waterberg - Windhoek



Day 1 and 2     Windhoek

Arrive at International Airport Windhoek and be welcomed by an African Desk tour guide. Drive via Rehoboth to Lake Oanob. You will stay in comfortable chalets directly located at the lake, you may ride horses or donkeys, discover the lake with a pedal boat or watch game. Breakfast and a sundowner at the day of arrival included .

Day 3    Sossusvlei

After breakfast departure for the highest dunes of the world - the Sossusvlei. Overnight in spacious and comfortable tents of a dunecamp (Weltvrede Guestfarm)


Day 4    Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei. Foto: Tom ForgraveA whole day in Sossusvlei. Departure shortly before sunrise to see the change of the dune's colours. The last 5 kilometres into the dunes can only be done with a 4x4 transfer.
Overnight in Weltevrede restcamp. Dinner, breakfast and lunch included.


Day 5 and 6    Swakopmund

Proceed to Swakopmund at the Atlantic Ocean. Close to the neighbouring city Walvisbay you will pass by the lagoon with pink flamingoes. Between february and december you can even take a bath in the ocean. During the rest of the year the water is icy cold - however, you will always find surfers in the waves. The Kristall Galerie or Karakulia Spinning and Weaving can be visited any time in between.
Overnight two times in a guesthouse or lodge. Breakfast included.


Day 7 and 8    Uis

Zu Gast auf einer DamarafarmPass through the lonely namibdesert and arrive at a Damarafarm close to the mining city Uis in the afternoon. You will find goats, sheep, cows and a donkey chart on that farm and for breakfast you will be served with warm bread from the coal oven.

At the coast line you can stop by the seal colony. On the following day Ernest, the owner of the farm, can trace the white desert elephants or the black rhino with you (only with a 4x4). You can also drive out to the Brandberg and see quite a famous bushmen painting - the socalled "white lady".
Two nights in a bungalow or at the campsite. Breakfast and Dinner included.


Day 9 and 10    Opuwo

Kinder in OpuwoAfter breakfast leave for Opuwo, the area of traditional cattle herders - the Ovahimba-Herero. The following day you will visit a village with your tour guide who will mediate and translate between both cultures. You may try a natural sunscreen out of butterfat and red oxydes, produced by the Ovahimba.

Stay two nights in Ohakana Lodge. Breakfast and Dinner included.


Day 11 and 12    Etosha

Giraffen in Etosha. Foto: Eva StieberFrom the people to the animals: You will part for the Etosha National Park today and encounter all the big game in this area: rhinos, zebras, giraffes or even lions. You can comfortably watch the animals drinking at a floodlid waterhole.
Stay two nights in Okaukeujo. No meals included. Breakfast and dinner in a restaurant or self catering.


Day 13    Etosha

Gamedrives across the Etosha Pan during the day. Spend another night at Fort Namutoni. There is another waterhole attracting a variety of antelopes and big game.


Day 14 and 15    Tsinsiabis

The trip to Tsinsiabis will lead you to the historical tracks of the San. Overnight in a remake of traditional bushmen huts. The next morning you will be taken on a historical bushmen trail. You will learn how to tell a poisenous from a healing plant or try to make fire with two sticks. Stay two nights. Dinner and breakfast included.
After the trail proceed to Waterberg Plateau Park and overnight in a bungalow.


Day 15, 16 and 17   Waterberg

view from Waterberg PlateauTracking, strolling or taking a bath in the pool of the waterberg Plateau Park. At the lower areas of the almost 20 km large rock massif there are a number of permanent springs, and the vegetation is relatively lush. During a gamedrive up to the plateau in an open jeep you will be able to watch zebras, rhinos and a variety of antelopes.
For all 3 nights in waterberg no meals included (selfcatering or restaurant).


Day 18    Windhoek

Depart for Windhoek. Last shoppings, maybe a visit in an African hairsalon, say Good-bye to the traces of colonial history and a multicultural Namibia of today.
Overnight in a guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner included.


Day 19    Windhoek

Transfer to Windhoek International Airport


Rate: 2.900 EURO per person

Please note that prices are subject to change according to exchange rate fluctuations of Namibian Dollar and foreign currencies. Prices can also vary according to high or low season.

Included:
Car and fuel, indigenous experienced tour guide, accomodation, fees for game reserves and Etosha Park, all meals apart from those in the (self catering) restcamps Waterberg and Etosha - you will either buy meat and vegetables for the barbecue together with your guide or eat in the restaurants.

Excluded:
Drinks, personal expenses, tips and telephone calls.
