Family holidays that grown ups and children will enjoy This three week trip is perfectly suited to families with small children. It includes comfortable accommodation as well as stays lasting several days, providing parents and children with enough time to adjust and settle in. Which child wouldn’t like to pet a cheetah? It will have the chance to do so at the Otjitotongwe Farm. During the visit of a Himbaherero village, children can meet and play with Namibian children of the same age.The desert provides the perfect setting for exploring and most hotels and lodges have a pool to cool down. The trip includes short hikes that are manageable even for the young ones. A local African desk tour guide, who speaks several Namibian languages and is fluent in German, will accompany you during the entire trip. He will navigate the car and take care of all the logistics during your trip.
ItineraryWindhoek - Rehoboth - Waterberg - Kamanjab - Mokuti - Omaruru - Swakopmund- Sossusvlei - Windhoek Day 1 to 3 Lake Oanob
Arrive at the Windhoek International Airport. Meet and greet with the local African Desk Tour Guide who will accompany you for the upcoming three weeks. Transfer via Rehoboth to Lake Oanob – a green and calming area where you can finally rest after your long flight. Lake Oanob is a water reservoir nestled in a green hilly landscape which is rather untypical for Namibia. The lodge offers a small pool where the children can splash in the water. Small boats are available to go on the Lake where you can observe cormorants, pelicans and wild horses. The spacious bungalows are covered with reed and equipped with a kitchen and crib on request. These are self-catering units.
Day 4 Waterberg
After breakfast you will head to Okahandja with a stop at the wooden craft market on request. The town Okahandja evolved from a missionary station which was founded in 1850. Okahandja is mainly populated by Hereros and has been for several generations. Afterwards, you will continue to the Waterberg Plateau Park via Otjiwarongo. The name originates from the water that drains away in the plateau and rises as springs on the bottom of the 20km wide mountain. Due to the water springs the mountain is bedded in a green nest while the remaining area is meagre and dry. Enjoy the view. A lovely barbeque awaits you under a canopy of stars. You will spend the night at the Waterberg Rest Camp Bungalows.
Day 5 Waterberg Today’s day is at leisure: Hiking or just taking a walk, swimming in the pool or a game drive in an open Jeep to the Plateau (offered daily at 3:00 PM). You will see kudus, springboks, rhinos and buffalos. Upon your return to the Camp you are likely to be welcomed by baboons. Watch out – they like to pay your kitchen a visit and look for all kinds of food.... so you better keep your door closed! Overnight at the Waterberg Rest Camp and self-catering.
Day 6 and 7 Kamanjab
In the early morning you continue to a Himbaherero village in Kamanjab where the children can play and interact with Namibian kids of the same age and adults have the chance to exchange thoughts. We recommend you bring a little welcoming gift such as sugar, tea or maize meal. Afterwards you continue to a cheetah park close to Kamanjab. Children have the ‘once in a life time’ opportunity to pet a cheetah – tamed, of course or just watch the cheetahs during their feeding. Two overnights at the Otjitotongwe Farm. Dinner with fresh ingredients will be prepared with lots of love and served on the farm.
Day 8 and 9 Mokuti
Continue to Fort Namutoni in the Etosha Nationalpark. After you drive past the town Tsumeb, you will pass the Lake Otjikoto. The name Otjikoto means "to deep for cows to drink out of". In the Fort you will be able to observe the wildlife while you drive through the Camp or at the nearby waterhole. Two overnights at the Mokuti Lodge located close to Etosha Nationalpark. Breakfast included. Dinner at the Lodge's restaurant is at own expense.
Day 10 to 12 Omaruru
After breakfast you will head to the Omaruru Game Lodge. The Camp’s waterhole is busy until late at night. You will be able to watch elephants, giraffes and several antelopes from a secure spot behind a bank during your stay.Three overnights in a bungalow with garden at the Omaruru Game Lodge. Breakfast and Dinner (alternatively at the lodge’s restaurant) are included.
Day 13 to 15 Swakopmund Transfer south via the Atlantic coast. You will pass Hentiesbay and Cape Cross which is home of more than 30.000 seals. Your final destination is Swakopmund. The architecture and infrastructure of this small coastal town reminds of the German colonialism. Dinner in a Seafood restaurant. The neighboring town Walvis Bay – about 30 minutes drive south of Swakopmund – offers dolphin cruises on the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes seals may even pay you a visit on the boat where you get the chance to experience those creatures up-front. Sandboarding, a desert tour or just a relaxing day at the beach – you have plenty of time to explore this picturesque town and its surrounding area. We recommend a visit of the leather factory where you can purchase well-priced footwear made of kudu leather – even for the little ones. A unique and memorable experience is a visit of the township Mondesa. Three nights stay in a bungalow at the Swakopmund Beach Lodge. The bungalows are equipped with a kitchenette, crib, garden and access to the beach, where the children can play. Breakfast is included.
Day 16 and 17 Sossusvlei
Today you will head to Sossusvlei through the Namib Naukuft Park where you may drive for miles without meeting any other human beings – only some antelope and ostriches will cross your way. The red dunes of Sossuslvei will inspire you and especially the children to climb up and enjoy the amazing view of the desert. You will especially enjoy the full extent of this colorful miracle in the early morning hours during the break of dawn. Breakfast will be served in the Vlei – either in a shady spot below a tree or on the dune ridge. Two overnights at the Sossusvlei Lodge located in the middle of the calming desert. Breakfast and dinner is included.
Day 18 to 21 Windhoek
For the remaining days of your trip you will have time to explore the capital of Namibia – Windhoek. Learn more about the township Katutura and the German heritage during a city tour. Purchase some souvenirs for your friends and family or relax at the ‘Zoo-Park’ located on Independence Avenue in the centre of Windhoek and watch locals strolling through the city. Four overnights in the family- friendly Pension Handke located close to the city centre of Windhoek. Breakfast included. Dinner at own expenses.
